Derry woman struck man with bottle over weight jibe
A single mother-of-three who hit a man on the back of his head with a Vodka bottle after he'd taunted her about her weight was given a suspended jail sentence at the Magistrate's Court in Derry.
Shauna McCartney (37), from Benevenagh Gardens in the Creggan, admitted swinging a plastic bag containing the bottle at the injured party as they both walked towards a bonfire near her home on August 19.
Defence solicitor Maeolisa Barr told the judge that both the defendant and the injured party, who required three staples for his head injury, had been drinking heavily.
“He began to verbally abuse the defendant about her weight, height and looks and she took this badly,” he said.
“She was in fear of him because of the earlier verbal abuse and because of what she believed was his threatening manner towards her she believed in striking him she was acting in self-defence,” he added.
McCartney was given a two-month jail sentence, suspended for two years.
