Diet blamed after obese girl (3) is diagnosed with Type 2 illness
A three-year-old obese girl has been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the US - one of the youngest people ever, experts said.
An "uncontrolled" calorie intake and poor diet led to the girl weighing 5st 7lb.The Hispanic girl was given drugs to bring her blood sugar levels under control.
Dr Michael Yafi, from the University of Texas, Houston, presented his findings at a diabetes conference in Stockholm. The girl visited his clinic for evaluation of obesity. She was suffering excessive thirst and going to the toilet a lot.
Experts found "poor family nutritional habits with uncontrolled counting of calories and fat".
Dr Yafi said: "Based on symptoms, physical findings of obesity and lab results, the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes was made."
