Dole cheat faces jail if she doesn't repay £15k
A woman has been ordered to repay more than £15,000 she wrongly claimed in benefits.
The Social Security Agency’s financial investigation unit has obtained a confiscation order to the value of £15,513 against Mary Byrne (59), of Daly Park, Finner, at Omagh Crown Court.
Byrne had claimed income support on the grounds that she was unfit for work and had no savings, yet she had failed to declare that she had significant levels of money in bank accounts.
Due to her failure to report her true circumstances, she received £15,120 in benefits she was not entitled to over a three-year period.
On July 2, 2012, the defendant pleaded guilty to three charges of failing to declare her true circumstances. She received a sentence of six months’ imprisonment suspended for two years.
Byrne was given a confiscation order to the value of £15,513 (taking account of inflation) with a default sentence of 12 months in the event of non-payment.
She has until January 30, 2013, to satisfy the order.
