Drains alert over discarded fat

Northern Ireland Water is warning its customers not to pour fat, oil and grease down the sink from their roast dinners this Easter.

Roast dinner remains emptied down a plug hole can cause major blockages in the sewerage system after the grease solidifies. Last year NI Water spent nearly £1.5m clearing drains and cleaning areas affected.

Des Nevin, NI Water’s head of networks sewerage, said: “Fat, oil and grease in its liquid form may not look harmful, but once in the drains it is.”

One way to dispose of cooking fat is to let it cool and solidify, and then scrape it into the rubbish bin, or alternatively it can be poured into a suitable container and taken to a council recycling centre.
