A man was fighting for his life in hospital last night after falling 30ft into a cave close to Dunluce Castle on the north coast.

He is understood to have been walking with his family on Sunday afternoon, close to the Co Antrim landmark, when he tumbled and fell from the path.

The incident was reported to the Coastguard at 6.40pm.

A rescue operation was mounted by the Portrush in-shore lifeboat, which was able to navigate into the cave.

The man was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, where his condition was described on Sunday as "seriously ill".

Last night, a spokeswoman for the Belfast Trust said the man remained critically ill.

Three other people - believed to be members of the injured man's family - were escorted to safety from the scene of the weekend incident.
