DUP councillor's fears for link road bats
Concern over bats has landed a DUP councillor in hot water who has voiced his objection to a multi-million investment project in Co Tyrone because he is concerned about the protected species.
Tom Buchanan expressed concern over proposed changes to the infrastructure conditions for the £350 million Opportunity Omagh development, which were discussed recently by Omagh District council’s planning committee.
Mr Buchanan said he was concerned what impact the new development might have on the current habitats of the bats.
The councillor has come under fire for highlighting his fears in a letter submitted to both the local planning office in Omagh and the Environment Minister, Alex Attwood.
The Strathroy Link Road is designed to reduce traffic congestion in Omagh town centre and is regarded as a crucial aspect of both the Opportunity Omagh and Lisanelly Education Campus projects and local planning officials had revealed they were of the ‘opinion to approve’ it.
