DUP MLA Sammy Douglas is back in the saddle just two weeks after being hit by a car while taking a morning bike ride.

The east Belfast Assembly member had to abandon his plans to take part in the Giro d'Italia Gran Fondo race after he was left bruised and with possible fractures to his fingers and ribs.

But he was back on his bike yesterday as he joined hundreds of cyclists who wheeled their way into Belfast city centre for the Ride On Belfast 4 event.

The morning mass ride is the main focal point of Bike Week, and is aimed at encouraging people to try commuting by bicycle.

Ride On Belfast is organised by The Fred Festival and Bikefast, supported by Belfast City Council and Travelwise.

It saw at least 200 people, including pensioners, cycle from Botanic Gardens to the City Hall for a free breakfast.
