A 70-year-old woman has died in a car crash on the Newry Road in Poyntzpass.

A 56-year-old man was also seriously injured in the two-car collision at around 5pm on Monday afternoon.

Ambulance, fire and police crews responded to the collision by the edge of Drumbanagher Wood.

Diversions were put in place at the Carnbane roundabout at Tandragee Road, Newry, while the mangled Renault Clio and Ford Focus were examined.

The deceased woman has been named locally as Anne Campbell, from Poyntzpass, but originally from Newry,

SDLP Newry and Armagh MLA Dominic Bradley said: “I am deeply shocked to hear of this lady dying. My thoughts are with her family at this particular time.

“I’m sure that her neighbours will rally around the family and help console them in this tragic situation.

“The cause of the accident is as yet unknown.”

Last night, a spokesman for the Southern Trust said the injured man had been admitted to Daisy Hill Hospital.

She described his condition as stable.
