Electricity customers need help, says Sammy Wilson
DUP MP Sammy Wilson has said Northern Ireland Electricity customers need "protection from predatory energy companies and naive and dishonest Government energy policies".
He told the House of Commons that Northern Ireland had the second highest fuel bills in Europe, but with "really only two" electricity providers, only 2.6% of people switch companies on a year-on-year basis.
Mr Wilson noted how when gas and oil prices went down, bill costs did not follow. But when prices go up, bills rise almost immediately.
"That is why it is important that the utilities regulator should be instructed to force energy firms to pass on reduced costs to the consumer.
"We do not have a free market therefore firms cannot be allowed a free hand to exploit their dominant market position on such an important part of household bills," he said.
