Ex-British Army base could become Irish language secondary school

By Donna Deeney

A former British Army base could be the site of the first Irish language secondary school for Londonderry and Strabane.

The steering group behind the An Bradan Feasa college - which translates as 'The Salmon of Knowledge' - have submitted plans to the Education Minister which they hope will result in the first intake of pupils in 2017.

Philip Sheerin, a member of the group, said the 400 pupils attending one of the four Irish medium primary schools in Derry and Strabane have a right to continue their education in the language.

He said: "We researched the level of interest from parents with children at one of the four Irish medium primary schools and 97% said they would like their children to continue their education in the language.

"We have selected Ebrington because there are suitable buildings available and it is a good location for the children in Strabane who would be travelling.

"It is also beside St Columb's Park so we would have access to the sports facilities there but we anticipate that we will be self-sustaining in three to four years."
