Ex-flatmates taken everywhere by BT

Two former south Belfast flatmates with no acting background have found themselves fronting a new BT advert.

David Downey and Lee Rushe were picked for the all-Ireland television campaign — something they had only applied for after a workmate recommended it.

The new BT marketing campaign focuses wholly on Northern Ireland and features a reworked version of Johnny Cash’s iconic ‘I’ve Been Everywhere’. It names over 45 local cities, towns and villages where BT offers products and services.

David, who has represented both Northern Ireland and Ireland at fencing games across the world, said of the audition process: “There were three guys on the panel and I basically had to sit on a chair in the middle of the room and speak about life.

“It was grand though as they focused on sport — and I could talk about sport all day.

“It’s all very random. Lee works with a girl who was doing the auditions, and she asked him to go along.

“He mentioned that I was into the fencing and they asked me to go along too.”

BT travelled over 700 miles across Northern Ireland for the making of the campaign.

Launched on September 12, it marks the eighth anniversary of the passing of Johnny Cash, and fans of the legend will have a chance to hear the reworked ‘I’ve Been Everywhere’ track performed live at a special BT hosted gig at the Empire on October 17 by Tribute band Keep It Cash.
