A former Linfield footballer has paid an emotional tribute after his grandson died after collapsing at a seaside amusement park.

Bradley Logan passed away on Friday after falling ill at premises close to Newcastle's Central Promenade. He was a grandson of ex-Linfield captain and manager Eric Bowyer.

Yesterday Mr Bowyer said: "Bradley was a great lad, full of fun. His tragic death is a great blow to the family. We will miss him so dearly."

Bradley (10) died hours before he was due to play in a cricket final.

Witnesses said he appeared to "just faint". Police said his death was not suspicious.

A pupil at Harmony Hill Primary School in Lisburn, he was due to start P7 class next month.

He also played for Derriaghy Cricket Club's under-11 team.

Club official David Skelton said: "He was just a fun-loving child who enjoyed his sport. He would go about with his grandfather and watch the football. Occasionally he would come down and watch the cricket too."

The full circumstances of the tragedy are still not clear. An ambulance and a rapid response paramedic were sent to Pleasureland, a popular outdoor fun fair in Newcastle, at around 3.30pm on Friday. Bradley was taken to the Royal Victoria Children's Hospital in Belfast for treatment, but later passed away.

Witnesses said the boy seemed to faint but it quickly became apparent that he was seriously ill.

Mr Skelton said Bradley was due to play for Derriaghy's under-11 side against Donaghcloney in their league final on Friday night.

"He was due to play cricket for us on Friday night. Our boys were playing in a league final and Bradley would have played," Mr Skelton added.

"I got a text at 3.50pm to say Bradley was in hospital. Then when the match was over I got a call from the father of one of the other players to tell me he had passed away. We are devastated."

In a statement, Derriaghy Cricket Club said: "The thoughts and prayers of everyone associated with the club go out to the family of our under-11 player Bradley whose untimely death on Friday has left us all devastated."

A minute's silence was observed before the club's games on Saturday.

Linfield FC said: "It is with much sadness that Linfield FC reports that Bradley Logan, 10-year-old grandson of Eric Bowyer, former Linfield captain and manager, died after collapsing in Newcastle on Friday.

"The deepest sympathy and most sincere condolences of everyone connected to Linfield Football Club are conveyed to the Bowyer family circle at this very sad time."

Pleasureland closed immediately after Friday's incident. The PSNI later said the circumstances were not suspicious.
