Ex-school caretaker jailed for child porn

By Lesley-Anne Henry

A former primary school caretaker has been jailed for six months for possessing more than 100 indecent images of children.

Ernest Logan (61), from Chippendale Avenue, Bangor, Co Down, was sentenced at Downpatrick Crown Court yesterday.

The court was told how Logan’s adult daughter had discovered the explicit photographs when she had checked his mobile telephone because she had suspected he was having an affair.

There were 146 graphic images including 11 which were defined as category four — the second most serious category. The court also heard the phone had contained more than 900 other pictures of unidentified young girls, but these were not deemed to be indecent by the authorities.

Prosecution barrister Stephanie Boyd said that when arrested and interviewed in April 2010, Logan admitted downloading the photographs but claimed that he had been carrying out research in a bid to find out “what made paedophiles tick”.

It was also claimed Logan had told police he was not aware that it had been an offence to possess the images and that he had not received sexual gratification from them.

However, rejecting his defence and imposing the jail term, Judge David Smyth QC said: “If you had been honest about these matters then the position might be different. But you have not and you have not faced up to your actions.”

Logan, who was dressed in a dark grey suit and tie, was visibly distraught as he was led from the dock. When the sentence was passed the defendant gasped and looked like he was going to pass out.
