Ex-soldier jailed after ‘illicit affair’ with teen
A former soldier who had an “illicit” affair with a 15-year-old girl has been jailed for five years after he admitted having sex with the teenager.
Belfast Crown Court heard that 40-year-old Nigel Hall, who has since lost the lower half of his left leg, began the relationship with the girl in the summer of 2008.
Prosecution QC Jackie Orr told the court that between June and September 2008, the pair had sex on numerous occasions and that there were other sexual offences committed, including the performing of a sex act behind a bush.
Arrested and interviewed, Hall, from Bendigo Street in east Belfast, denied any wrongdoing but later pleaded guilty to four charges of indecent assault and one of gross indecency.
He was originally charged with rape but Ms Orr said the facts and circumstances surrounding the case made it more akin to unlawful carnal knowledge rather than rape, so two of the indecent assault charges represented the unlawful sex.
Defence QC Paul Ramsey said that despite earlier protestations, Hall now accepted “full responsibility for his actions which he totally regrets and is sorry for”.
