Face of beast who raped and tried to kill 8-year-old girl in Newry
A horrific attack on an eight-year-old girl during which she was raped, tied to a tree and then left for dead "continues to haunt" the community where it happened almost two decades on.
Earlier this year, police re-opened the investigation into the brutal assault on the child in Newry, Co Down, in 1994.
And yesterday, they released an image of a man they want to speak to regarding the savage attack.
The man, who was in his late teens or early 20s at the time, would now be in his late 30s or early 40s. The picture is intended to show how he may look 19 years on.
A police officer who was involved in the initial investigation described the incident as "shocking". The eight-year-old girl was playing with a friend near Barcroft Community Centre on June 10, 1994. They were approached by a man who lured the victim away from her friend, telling her they were looking for someone.
He took her to a wooded area within Daisy Hill Nursery where he attacked her.
Independent councillor Jackie Patterson said: "It was a shocking incident and it is vital that somebody is brought to justice."
Police are treating the attack on the child as attempted murder.
The then chairman of Barcroft Community Association, Vincent McCormack, said the child's ordeal was "an act of depravity".
A fresh investigation was launched in February.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact detectives on 028 3836 6274. Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
