Families told to make appointment to visit graves
Bereaved relatives whose loved ones are buried in a Co Down graveyard have been upset that they can’t visit graves without arranging an appointment.
St John's Church of Ireland in Hilltown closed its doors in 1984 and with the church now boarded up and the gates to its adjoining graveyard locked, one mourner said she can’t visit her father’s grave when she feels like it.
The mourner declined to be named but she told the Co Down Outlook: “There seems to be only one person who has a key and that means that we cannot just decide to visit dad's grave when we want - it all has to be arranged.”
Rector for St John's Church of Ireland, Rathfriland, Rev David Somerville, said: “We do have someone who has a key for the graveyard and families can contact him if they wish to visit the graves."
