Family home attack 'murder bid'

An arson attack on a family home in Coleraine is being treated as attempted murder, police have said.

A mother and father and two children were trapped inside the property in Rinvarna Court when it was ignited last night.

Two of the occupants had to be rescued by firefighters and passers by. All four were taken to hospital, where two were treated for smoke inhalation.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Catherine Magee said: "Substantial damage was caused to a door and the front of the property.

"This is a very serious incident and we are extremely lucky we are not investigating the death of a young family."

The officer appealed to anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the area to contact the PSNI or pass the information anonymously through the Crimestoppers charity.
