A prize heifer has become an unlikely matchmaker after playing a starring role in a romantic 'dairy-tale' wedding.

Gorgeous, a British Blue prize cow, was the only twinkle in the eye of Steven O'Kane (31), from Garvagh in Co Londonderry, until the heifer came to the attention of livestock buyer Katrina Donaldson (24).

Steven had been showing Gorgeous at competitions across northern England until he had an offer to buy her.

"Katrina is a livestock buyer," he said. "She spotted Gorgeous and wanted to buy her to start up a new herd."

"I told her I would sell her Gorgeous on the condition I could take her out on a date – I think Katrina agreed just to get the heifer!"

Steven later moved to Katrina's home of Huby in North Yorkshire. "Whether I missed the heifer or I missed Katrina, I don't know," he joked.

The pair were married on May 31 and while Gorgeous was not allowed on the church grounds, she played a huge role in the reception.

"Gorgeous had to be there, this is me and Katrina's baby, she's our angel," said Steven.
