Father's vicious killing 'shocked west Belfast community'

The murder of a father beaten to death in west Belfast has shocked the community, a priest told mourners at his funeral.

Christopher Meli, 20, was attacked on a pathway in the Twinbrook area during the early hours of December 12.

It is believed up to 20 people were involved in a number of violent incidents that ended with the killing on grassland known locally as Doc's Lane.

Father Aidan Denny told mourners at the Church of the Annunciation: "Nothing can prepare us for something like this."

His coffin was taken from his home in Sliabh Dubh Lane on Monday and placed in a horse-drawn funeral hearse. A lone piper led the cortege.

Police have said Mr Meli was subjected to a sustained and vicious assault.

His death has caused devastation to his family and shocked the wider community, officers have added.
