Fermanagh collision victim may have been murdered

BY STEVEN ALEXANDER

A man who died in what was initially thought to have been a hit-and-run accident may have been murdered, the PSNI has said.

Pat John McCafferty (49) died on the Tullychurry Road area of Leggs, Belleek, Co Fermanagh, in the early hours of Sunday after he was struck by a vehicle.

A 40-year-old man was arrested by gardai in the Pettigo area of Co Donegal later on Sunday and he has since been released pending a report to the Director of Public Prosecutions in the Republic.

The PSNI said it intends to prosecute the man arrested in the Republic in a court in Northern Ireland, and that a major line of inquiry is to establish whether Mr McCafferty was murdered.

The blue Ford Focus believed to have been involved in the incident has been recovered by police.

Police are continuing to appeal for any information following the incident that occurred at approximately 2.50am. Contact police in Enniskillen on 0845 600 8000.
