A family have escaped injury after shots were fired at a house in the Milltown Court area of Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh.

Shots were fired at a property and a vehicle set alight at around 1.20am on Wednesday.

The family, including young children, were in the property at the time, however, there were no reports of any injuries.

The Fermanagh & South Tyrone MP Tom Elliott condemned those responsible the attack and appealed for anyone who had any information to contact the PSNI.

Mr Elliott said: "It is chilling to think just how utterly stupid this act was.  There were young children in the property at the time when the shots were fired and this could have so easily ended in tragedy.

"There must be consequences for those who engage in such serious criminality."

Detective Sgt. Keith Monaghan said: "Our enquiries are ongoing, and at this stage, we’d like to speak to anyone who may have heard or seen anything suspicious in the area in and around this time.

"If you can help please call the 101 number, quoting reference number 58111115. Alternatively information about crime can be passed via the independent Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111."
