Forty firefighters have tackled a massive blaze at a tyre recycling plant in Co Down.

The fire – described as "significant" – took hold at OM Tyres in Mayobridge at around 3.30pm yesterday.

Several crews who were sent to the scene discovered around one thousand tyres were involved in the blaze, which was finally brought under control at around 8pm.

Late last night crews remained at the scene in order to fully extinguish the fire.

Group commander Edward Carroll said: "It was quite a significant fire and we were somewhat hampered by strong winds which were fanning the flames."

Last night a spokesman for the Department of the Environment said that Minister Alex Attwood was being kept "fully informed" about the blaze.

"NI Environment Agency has been on site and is co-ordinating with the Fire Service in order to reduce the risk of pollution," he said.
