Fireman treated in hospital after youths hurl bricks at crew in Belfast

A fireman was taken to hospital after coming under attack in North Belfast.

The victim suffered extensive bruising to his lower leg and foot after youths threw bricks and stones at a crew attending a deliberate fire at the Ballysillan Playing Fields on Sunday night.

Assistant Group Commander Chris Fee, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, said it was fortunate he was not seriously hurt.

"This sort of behaviour is completely mindless, and I would ask for community leaders and parents to bring whatever influence they can to stop this happening in the future."

The fire appliance was slightly damaged. The crew member has since returned to duty.

Mr Fee added: "While the majority of our community support our firefighters and the work we do in protecting our community, there is always a small minority of people who carry on in this manner."
