By Claire Cromie

Five masked men are understood to have beaten a north Belfast man with hammers in his own home.

Shortly after midnight on Monday, it was reported that up to five males entered a house in Rosapenna Street, between Cliftonville Road and Oldpark Road.

A male resident in his fifties, who was upstairs at the time, was ordered downstairs where he was beaten with hammers on his hands and feet.

He was treated in hospital for his injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.

Detectives say the incident was an aggravated burglary.

Enquiries are continuing and witnesses are asked to contact CID at Grosvenor Road on 0845 600 8000, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
