Former Belfast Lord Mayor Mairtin O Muilleoir reiterates opposition to Belfast city plan
A former Lord Mayor has repeated his opposition to ambitious new plans to regenerate Belfast city centre, claiming areas in urgent need have been left out.
Yesterday the Belfast Telegraph revealed that Sinn Fein councillor Mairtin O Muilleoir will not back a city centre plan unless more streets are included.
International city planner Joe Berridge designed proposals known as Belfast: Future City suggesting how the city centre could be transformed. But Mr O Muilleoir says he will not back it unless a West Centre zone is added, saying the omission of the west would result in the "Balkanisation" of the city centre.
That proposal was passed at the meeting of the super council's transformation committee, but voted down at a meeting of the full shadow council.
Yesterday Mr O Muilleoir posted 10 photographs on his Twitter account showing rundown parts of the city. "Each of those pics are different scenes of desolation and abandonment which are written out of new city centre plan. I won't be signing up for it," he tweeted.
