The former chief executive of animal charity USPCA has been arrested by detectives investigating allegations of fraud.

Stephen Philpott (53) was arrested along with a 52-year-old woman in the Newry area on Wednesday morning.

The investigation started in April following a complaint made to police concerning potential fraud within the USPCA.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Wilson, from PSNI Economic Crime Unit, said: “A complaint was made to police in April and, as a result of our enquiries, two people were arrested this morning.

"They are being questioned at Banbridge police station.”
