Four men have been arrested after an improvised explosive device was found in a car and made safe, police have said.

The men, in their late 20s to early 40s, were detained after the vehicle was stopped on a country road at Forgney, close to Ballymahon in Co Longford yesterday.

Gardai said the operation was part of ongoing investigations into dissident republicans.

A house that was raided in a follow-up search has been preserved for a technical examination.

The Army bomb squad was called to the scene and made the device safe without the need for a controlled explosion.
