Four held over illegal fuel plant
Four men have been arrested after the discovery of a suspected fuel laundering plant in Co Armagh.
The operation was found in a farm shed in the Jonesborough area. HM Revenue and Customs officials estimated the plant was capable of producing over 4.3million litres of fuel a year.
More than 8,000 litres of fuel, two cars, pumps, equipment and three tonnes of toxic waste were seized during yesterday's operation. A converted 20ft lorry suspected to be used for transporting laundered fuel was also seized.
The four men, all from Co Armagh, were questioned by HMRC officers and released on bail.
Newry and Armagh MLA Danny Kennedy is seeking a meeting with HMRC to raise his concerns about fuel smuggling.
"I want to see those responsible made more accountable for their actions, which is causing such distress to my constituents and doing immense damage to the environment," he added.
