Four men held over murder of dad Brian McIlhagga

By Michael McHugh

Police investigating the murder of a father-of-five have made four arrests.

Brian McIlhagga (42) was attacked and killed when at least three armed and masked men forced their way into a house in Riverview Park in Ballymoney, Co Antrim, earlier this month.

The PSNI said men aged 22, 23, 33 and 34 were detained in the town yesterday and are currently being questioned at Antrim police station.

Mr McIlhagga, a plasterer who was originally from the Ballymena area, was dragged out of the house in a quiet cul-de-sac where he was visiting a girlfriend, beaten and shot once in the leg in the front garden.

Despite frantic resuscitation efforts by neighbours, Me McIlhagga died.

A 32-year-old woman who was also in the house was battered and forced to lie on the kitchen floor while the shooting took place.

A number of children were also in the house when the attack took place but it is not clear whether they witnessed the horrific incident.

A clear motive for the shooting has not yet been established.

Several people have been arrested as part of the investigation over the past two weeks but no-one has been charged.
