Four months for serial thug over new assault

By George Jackson

A 26-year-old man who repeatedly punched another man on the face several months after he had been convicted of a charge of cruelty against his victim's child, has been jailed for four months at Londonderry Magistrates Court.

Ian William Reid, from Duncastle Road in Newbuildings, admitted assaulting his victim on March 18 of last year.

District Judge Barney McElholm said Reid, who had 76 previous convictions, went into the garden of his victim's home where he repeatedly punched him on the face in an unprovoked attack.

Mr McElholm said in the previous November, Reid had been sentenced at the Crown Court for committing an act of cruelty against his victim's young child.

He said Reid had shown no remorse for the assault on his victim and had denied the offence up until the last minute.

The District Judge said he did not believe a single word of apology written by Reid in a letter he had submitted to the court.
