Parents are being offered a new free service to help with the cost of sending children back to school.

The Northern Ireland Housing Executive is encouraging tenants to contact Citizens Advice for money management help and advice as the summer rolls on.

Last year a survey found that parents of primary school children spent £96 per child on uniforms, while parents of secondary school children spent £180.

The Housing Executive's Jennifer Hawthorne said the service was in response to a growing demand. "Over the years thousands of tenants have had a weight lifted from their shoulders by asking for debt help," she added.

Kathy McKenna of Citizens Advice said: "We understand 'back to school' time can be difficult for parents already under financial strain. We would urge anyone having money worries to contact the service for free, impartial and confidential advice."
