Fresh anguish for Miss NI as uncle is jailed on sex charge
An uncle Miss Northern Ireland Lori Moore has been jailed in England for having sex with a school pupil.
The case means further personal anguish for the beauty queen whose mother was murdered in 2006.
Neil Moore, a music teacher at the prestigious Hereford Cathedral School in Herefordshire, was sentenced to 15 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child while in a position of care.
Worcester Crown Court heard how the 31-year-old, whose address was given as Erris Grove in west Belfast, invited the teenage boy to his Hereford home where they viewed each other’s profiles on a gay dating website. The pair watched a film and Moore allegedly plied the teen with alcohol before initiating the sexual contact.
Moore then bombarded the youth with text messages which came to the attention of another teacher at the school and an investigation was launched.
It is understood Moore, who had taught at the school for seven years, resigned last year and attempted suicide in February.
At the court hearing late last month, Judge Patrick Thomas QC, told Moore he had carried out the “deliberate seduction” of a vulnerable pupil who was unsettled about his sexuality.
Defence lawyer Bruce Gray, said the teacher was not a predatory paedophile and that he had been “badly affected” by the brutal murder of his sister, Grace Moore, in 2006.
The lawyer said his client believed life was too short — and began engaging in more promiscuous behaviour.
“He’s devastated by what he’s done,” the lawyer told the court. “He’s thrown everything away he’s worked for.”
Shop assistant Grace Moore (38) was raped and stabbed to death by Nigerian immigrant, Kristoff Emmanuel Alauya in November 2006. After killing the glamorous mother-of-one, Alauya robbed her home.
The murder sent shockwaves across Northern Ireland and there was a national wave of sympathy for Ms Moore’s only daughter Lori, who was just 16 when she returned to find her mother’s lifeless body in their home at Erris Grove.
Earlier this year, Lori, aged 19, was crowned Miss Northern Ireland and she has gone on to represent the province at the Miss World competition in China.
While Neil Moore will never teach again, the court was told he intends to become a professional musician and has been accepted on to a masters degree course at Cambridge.
The Belfast Telegraph contacted the Hereford Cathedral School yesterday but no one was available for comment.
