Fun runners support Haiti quake victims
Olympic gold medalist Dame Mary Peters was back in action on Sunday in a fund raising event for charity.
She joined hundreds of runners at Ormeau Park who turned up to support victims of the recent devastating Haiti earthquake.
One of the organisers of the 5k sprint, Anto O’Kane, said he was overwhelmed by the support shown.
“This event has been organised in under three weeks and although we were optimistic we really didn’t know how big the response would be,” he said.
“We’re delighted that so many people have come along.”
South Belfast politicians Alex Maskey, Anna Lo, Alex Attwood and Conall McDevitt also turned up to show their support.
Said Mr Maskey: “It is of little surprise to me that the citizens of Belfast are so ready to step up to the mark in terms of assisting the devastated people of Haiti. The run brought many people from different walks of life together for what is a very worthwhile cause.
“I want to commend and congratulate the organisers and in particular the people of Belfast whose kindness and generosity, even in difficult times, is second to none.”
Money raised will go to the UK-based Disasters Emergency Committee.
