The funeral of a young man killed in a car crash in Castlewellan takes place today.

Daryl Shaw (28), from Burren Walk in the town, died after a one-vehicle accident on the Newcastle Road in Castlewellan in the early hours of Friday.

The funeral procession will leave Mr Shaw's home at 9.30am, for the funeral mass at St Malachy's Church, Castlewellan, at 10am. Interment will follow at Aughlisnafin cemetery.

Canon Sean Rogan said he expected a large turn-out at the funeral.

"It is an open mass, open to those of all faiths and none," said Canon Rogan.

"The people of Castlewellan are a very compassionate and caring community and will be so supportive of the family. Daryl was a popular young fellow who was the life and soul of the party."

On Sunday the funeral service also took place for a second victim on Northern Ireland's roads in recent days.

Ashley James (20), a contractor for a farming-related company, was killed as he drove along Derryanvil Road, near Portadown, shortly before 10am on Thursday.

His red Peugeot 207 collided head-on with a telescopic handler on the tight country route.

The highly regarded former Greenmount Agricultural College student, well-known by the farming community, was from Clonmore Road in Dungannon.

The funeral service took place at Loughgall Presbyterian Church yesterday afternoon followed by interment in the adjoining burial ground.
