Fury at beach bash rubbish mountain at Helen's Bay
Five tonnes of rubbish have had to be cleared from a North Down beauty spot after thousands of people attended a beach party organised on Facebook.
Riot police had to go on patrol at Helen’s Bay when a huge contingent of revellers descended upon the beach on Sunday, in a bid to prevent a repeat of a similar performance the day before.
As partiers downed booze under the blazing sun, news of the party quickly spread on the social networking site and as numbers spiralled, fights also broke out.
Mert Thompson, warden of Crawfordsburn County Park said there was an “incredible amount of litter”.
He said: ”There were a couple of fields there at the front of Crawfordsburn and Helen’s Bay where we could barely see the grass for litter. I’ve never seen anything like it - it was piled thick in places.”
