Masked thugs wielding a baseball bat have burgled an elderly man in east Belfast.

The terrifying incident happened at My Lady's Road on Wednesday evening.

The three thugs entered his property armed with the baseball bat, ransacked the house and stole an amount of money.

The victim was not physically injured.

DUP councillor Adam Newton called the gang "despicable thieves".

"These vile thugs, armed with a baseball bat, stole the senior citizen's savings.

"Fortunately, the victim was not physically injured.

"But he will have suffered a degree of trauma that may continue for some time."

Detectives in Belfast have appealed for witnesses to contact them on 101.

They can also use the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
