Gay lover's ‘bully’ partner is jailed
A “bully” who assaulted his gay lover and threatened to kill him after he thwarted a suicide bid has been jailed for two and a half years.
Jailing Gary McErlean (41) at Belfast Crown Court, Judge Patrick Lynch QC said he was a “bully” but not a dangerous offender.
During his trial last February, McErlean, from Delaware Street in Belfast, pleaded guilty to three counts of causing actual bodily harm to his former lover, causing criminal damage to his shirt and threatening to kill him on dates between February 28, 2007 and February 10, 2009.
Defence QC Dermot Fee had urged the court that the time McErlean had spent on remand was sufficient to meet the seriousness of the case.
However Judge Lynch told him he was not so sympathetically disposed to McErlean.
