Girl (5) dies after being struck by car in Irvine Park, Bangor

Girl was struck by a vehicle in Irvine Park

The PSNI in Bangor is appealing for witnesses following the death of a five-year-old girl who was struck by a vehicle in Irvine Park on Thursday afternoon.

Sergeant Brian Shankey said, "The collision took place shortly after 5pm and involved a grey coloured Hyundai car. The driver of the car has been spoken to by police and is helping with our enquiries.

"The young girl was taken by ambulance to hospital following the collision, but died from her injuries. I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Irvine Park and has any information which may assist us with our enquiries to contact police at Bangor on 101."

Alliance North Down MLA Stephen Farry expressed his condolences to the family.

Mr Farry said: "I was very saddened to learn of the death of this young girl. I would like to send my deepest condolences to her family and friends at what must be a difficult time for them.

"The death of this young girl has shocked the local community. This is an absolute tragedy.

"This incident has shown the importance of all road users being vigilant for others. We must ensure that no more lives are lost on our roads. Even one death on our roads is one too many."
