A seven-year-old girl hit by a car in east Belfast yesterday was in a stable condition last night.

The child, who was seen wearing a Dundela Infants' School uniform, was struck by the vehicle off the Newtownards Road near the Holywood Arches.

She was taken to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children for treatment.

Local councillor Jim Rodgers said: "Yet again, we find someone being injured by a vehicle.

"I wish the child a full and speedy recovery."

Mr Rodgers also warned that people needed to do more to keep the roads safe.

"Virtually every day someone is seriously injured or killed on our roads," he said.

"All of us need to do more. It is very worrying to see the number of fatalities and serious injuries, even minor injuries."

He added that road accidents put pressure on hospitals, ambulance service, police officers and emergency workers, but they are especially distressing for the families of victims.
