Granny gets in gear for Transplant Games
A grandmother who underwent a bone marrow transplant is gearing up to take on the world after being selected to represent the UK in the World Transplant Games next July.
Former primary school teacher Fidelma Hodkinson will be the only female in the senior category from Northern Ireland bound for the 2013 Games in Durban, South Africa.
The inspirational 61-year-old will compete in both the 100-metre and 200-metre sprint races, as well as riding in the 5k time trial and the 20k road race.
Mrs Hodkinson said she never dreamed she would be an athlete competing at such a top level 11 years after being diagnosed with leukemia.
She said: “I had the transplant in 2002. The year before I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. I was just over 50. I smile to myself every time I think about it now. I am an athlete competing on an international stage in the World Games.”
