Hammer gang puts man in hospital

By Chris Kilpatrick

A man is recovering in hospital after he was battered in his home by a hammer-wielding gang.

Three masked men forced their way into the 43-year-old victim’s Ballymoney home at around 8.30pm on Tuesday.

They then launched a vicious assault on the man, beating him with hammers.

He was rushed to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine before being transferred to Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry.

Police said the incident at Carnany Drive had the hallmarks of a paramilitary-style attack, but said they do not know why the man was targeted.

Ballymoney DUP councillor John Finlay said the incident had shocked the local community, adding that those responsible must be brought to justice.

“I strongly condemn this incident and all attacks of this nature and they need to cease immediately,” said Mr Finlay.

North Antrim DUP MLA Mervyn Storey said the attack was “worrying”, adding: “It is essential that we maintain the rule of law and not allow mob rule... to replace the process of the courts.”
