A man has been taken to hospital following an assault in west Belfast.

It happened this afternoon in the Hawthorn Street in west Belfast. Police were alerted to the incident at around 1.40pm.

The victim, understood to be in his thirties, was immediately taken to hospital by ambulance. He is believed to be in a very serious condition.

A section of Hawthorn Street remains cordoned off while police carry out an examination of the scene and speak to potential witnesses.

Anyone who was in the area or anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact police by calling 101.
