He's the mane man: Belfast Zoo Barbary lion Qays celebrates his 12th birthday in style
Qays was certainly the mane man at Belfast Zoo this weekend.
The Barbary lion is celebrating his 12th birthday, and he did so complete with gifts and a roaring welcome from visitors.
Qays was born in 2003 and arrived at Belfast Zoo from Port Lympne Wild Animal Park in 2005.
Since then he has become a favourite with staff and visitors.
Earlier this year it was three adorable gentoo penguin chicks which were turning heads at the zoo.
Zoo keepers have been preparing for their arrival since February, installing nest rings into the penguin enclosures and even putting up umbrellas for shade and to protect the parents and chicks from wet weather.
The chicks, hatched in May, are becoming more independent and exploring the penguin pool.
Zoo manager Mark Challis said the penguins were a firm favourite with visitors, especially in the underwater viewing area where they can be observed smoothly gliding through the water.
