Hijackers hit man with hammer

A man was struck over the head by a gang of armed robbers before they jumped into his car and drove it away.

The attack happened at Kiltonga Industrial Estate, Newtownards, on Wednesday evening — the second of two similiar incidents.

Three masked men, one armed with a hammer, got out of a blue Ford Fiesta and approached a couple in a black Vauxhall Astra car.

The gang demanded the couple get out and, as they did, the man was struck on the head. Earlier, at Londonderry Park on the Portaferry Road, a woman sitting alone in a silver Mitsubishi Shogun had been approached by two masked men, one armed with a hammer.

They demanded that the woman hand over the car keys and she refused. The men then smashed the rear window of her car. Police have appealed for witnesses.
