A hoax bomb caused disruption in a north coast town yesterday.

Traffic chaos hit Ballycastle after a security alert brought Army bomb disposal experts to the scene to investigate a suspicious object in the town's Quay Road area.

Quay Road was closed to traffic and diversions were in place at Rathlin Road and Mary Street.

Councillor Padraig McShane said: "We have had a number of hoax or suspect packages which have turned out to be false.

"Whoever is responsible, the alerts are creating hardship and fear within the local community."
