Hoax device triggers bomb alert

An army bomb disposal team has carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect device inside a Northern Ireland police station.

A member of the public brought the device into the inquiry office of Carrickfergus PSNI station just after 8pm on Tuesday.

The building was evacuated and a number of residents living nearby also had to leave their homes.

Roads in the area were closed to traffic for over an hour.

A spokesman for the PSNI said the device had been a hoax.

The police station and roads have since re-opened. Householders have also been allowed to return home.
