Published 08/05/2015

Homes were evacuated in Ballygowan overnight due to a security alert.

Shortly after midnight, police were called to deal with a suspicious object in the Meadow Road area.

Following examination by Army technical officers, the device was declared an elaborate hoax.

Residents were only allowed to return to their homes around 6.30am on Friday morning.

Superintendent Brian Kee said: "I would like to thank the public for their co-operation during this operation. I would appeal to anyone who has any information about this incident to contact Detectives in Bangor on the non-emergency number 101.

"Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."
