Almost 500 pigs have been killed in an overnight fire at a farm in Co Tyrone.

The blaze ripped through two sheds at the pig farm on the Melmount Road in Strabane.

Firefighters managed to stop the fire spreading to five other animal sheds and saved 16 sows and 160 piglets from the burning buildings. However, 33 sows and 420 piglets were killed.

Six fire appliances and one command support unit attended the scene after the fire was reported at 5.38am. A cause has not been established.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and the Police Service of Northern Ireland are investigating.
