Ice cream eaters lick their way to a record
Thousands of eager ice-cream fans licked their way into the history books at the weekend with a successful bid to smash the record for the longest chain of people eating ice cream.
Almost 3,000 people took to the sun-kissed coast in Portstewart on Saturday to join in the Guinness World Record attempt to break the previous record of 2,694, in celebration of Morelli's centenary this year.
A total of 2,728 eager participants formed snakes of 50 people in the grounds of Dominican College at 3pm to break the previous record held by Augustana College in the US.
Daniela Morelli led the rest of her family and the thousands of record-breakers during the attempt which she said went exactly as planned.
"It was great - thousands of people turned out and everything turned out very well.
"The weather was superb and everything went off perfectly," she said.
Although not official until the paperwork and the attempt are officially verified, Daniela hopes the new record will help bring in the tourists to the already popular seaside town.
"It was all to celebrate our centenary and we hopefully did a bit for tourism, people were there from as far away as Australia.
"We couldn't have done it without all the support."
