Errigle Inn, Belfast:

It has been serving pints for decades and yestersday one of Belfast’s most famous pubs and live music venues celebrated a milestone birthday.

The landmark Errigle Inn on the Ormeau Road has been in business for 75 years and a year-long party kicked off tonight to mark it.

General manager Phil McGurran is the third generation of his family to run the pub.

“My grandfather, Thomas James McGurran opened it as a manager on Friday December 13, 1935,” he said.

“He was working in the Ava Bar in Bangor for Charlie McQuaid who asked him to open a new venture in Belfast called |the Errigle.”

He continued: “He bought the Errigle shortly after it opened.

“It is funny to think that my grandfather, who opened the Errigle in 1935, had toyed between the notion of being either a pig farmer or a barman.

“He was advised by his uncle to pursue a career as a barman. He made the right choice.”

The Errigle, which was named after the townland where Mr McQuaid’s wife came from in Co Fermanagh, has served the public through times of strife including the Second World War and the Troubles.

It now employs 74 people and has five different bars including the Oak Lounge which was opened on the day King George was crowned.

In the 1950s it was often frequented by Canadian soldiers who were based nearby.
